Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response

Hi there,

I have a SBS 2003 machine with exchange SP 2 installed. I'm trying to connect some new iphones to our exchange server but having difficulties (despite much progress). I can ow successfully verify them on the iphones but they will not send or receive email.

On running www.testexchangeconnectivity.com i get all greens with the exception of:

Attempting FolderSync command on ActiveSync session
  FolderSync command test failed
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it
   Additional Details
Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response.

I have followed all the instructions in https://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_1798-Exchange-2003-Activesync-Connection-Problems-FAQ.html for the virtual directory configurations and now at a stand still.

Would greatly appreciate some advice \ guidance in integrating these iphones.

I have also downloaded and used the ihone activesync tester utility and again, I get all passes with exception of :

Active sync is NOT available. (activesync detected, but not correctly configured. (HTTP 500:Forms-based auth enabled?)

I have already disabled the forms based authentication in exchange?

If you have followed my article and not gotten anywhere - please rebuild your virtual directories:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380 - Method 3 is the easiest.
Once done, re-run the Connect to the Internet Wizard, changing nothing - this will put everything back to how it should be, then run the test at https://testexchangeconnectivity.com again and if that fails, run through the virtual directory settings in my FAQ again and then run the test.

oh dear..

OK. I did recently install SP 2 and note that when I now go to re run internet wizard it states that this is not a windows small business computer. Are you aware of this issue and could it have anything to do with it?
That does not sounds like a happy SBS box - I'll do some digging.
Are there any errors in the Application Event log that appear when you run the Wizard?
When you say SP2 - is that Exchange SP2 or Windows 2003 server SP2?
both SPs installed and nothing untowardly in the application log although my skills very limited!
Can you please take a screen dump of the error message you see when you run the Wizard and post it here.
Thanks

Prior to installing SP2 for Windows - what SP level was the SBS box at?
Thankfully - there seems to be a hotfix for this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940318
That seems to have worked fine on the internet wizard error - thanks :)

I will follow the steps you suggested in the morning as been at it too long today - any other ideas or suggestions please let me know.

Thanks
Understood.  Fingers crossed.
Hi Alanhardisty, I followed your steps as recommended (with no issues) but unfortunately when running the exchange connectivity test I still get the following:
Attempting FolderSync command on ActiveSync session
       FolderSync command test failed
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it

      Additional Details
Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response.

This is driving me nuts! also, whenrunning the iphone Activesync tester I still get:
Active sync is NOT available. (activesync detected, but not correctly configured. (HTTP 500:Forms-based auth enabled?)

Is there anything else you can advise? I'm also a little concerned with the domains that I am using for the tests e.g. should I be using the netbios domain or domain realm (domain.local) note the email address is domain.co.uk?

Also, just so this is not overlooked, does active sync need to be installed on a users laptop and synced with an iphone in the first instance?

Again, any further ideas \ suggestions to crack this http 500 error would be greatly appreciated!
For the Activesync test, please use the following settings:
Manually specify server settings
Enter the FQDN for your server e.g., mail.yourdomain.com - as long as this resolves in DNS to your Internet Facing IP Address.
Domain\Username - internal domain name e.g., company\user not company.local\user
Password - No clues!
You can tick the Ignore trust check box if you are using a self-signed certificate otherwise it will fail.
No connection between the device and the PC needs to be made before it will work and quite often, this can make matters worse!
Please run the tests again, using the above settings and report back with the results.
The result with the following 3 domain\username settings:

Domain.local\username

Did you reset the Virtual Directories, re-run the connect to the internet wizard and then check permissions as per my FAQ?
yes followed the steps including the iis resets. cant help but think it is something more simple!

For ref, i have tried the outlook connectivity tests and get the following erroor - not sure if it is related?
Attempting to ping RPC Endpoint 6001 (Exchange Information Store) on server mail.servername.co.uk

Confusing thing is that both https:\\mail.servername.co.uk\exchange and https:\\mail.servername.co.uk\oma both work fine on IE and iphone web browser.

Working !!

The SBS 2003 best practise analyzer identified that http keep alives 'should' be enabled. I did this then I got the green lights and the iPhone now syncs.

many thanks for your help and patience!
very helpful
Excellent news - well done.
I too had to enable those damn 'keep alives' lol :)

Thanks!
Im having the same problem. But my 'keep alives' are enabled. Does anyone have any more ideas please?

Thanks in advance

Scott
Thanks for the quick reply

I went right through your article (excellent by the way) and I had no luck. Of particular interest was the bit  about Application Event Log 3005 error which we are getting on our server. So I followed the kb to the letter and still no luck.

Looking through the log file, I get this (small snippet). I am trying the app activesync tester on my iPhone to connect as well as the mail icon on my iPhone.

If you post / email me a link, I will take a look.

Of course. I will do that asap. Thanks Alan
if the port settings on the defualt web page are something other than 80 and 443 you also get this error.
HDM - that is covered in my article.
