Convert ZFS on HP NL 40 to Synology NAS: connect sharkoon cable to sata?

Hi,

Back in time, I configured a ZFS on HP NL 40 Microserver.
Therefore I used an LSI controller and a sharkoon with 6 bays (please see posts from then).

Now I installed Synology OS on HP NL 40 and removed the LSI to use the slot for dual NIC card. It is all working great, I have two SSD's in RAID0 for my fast vm's, SATA RAID5 for data and slower vm's.
Now I still have this sharkoon cable which I could attach to my sata slot on motherboard and attach 3 extra SSD's this way.

My question: I wonder why the LSI was needed to attach the sharkoon with 6 SSD's. I could have attached it via the sata slot on motherboard? Or would performance degrade that much? Then I might stick to just 2 sata's in RAID0 (1 ssd connected to sata on motherboard, other to external esata).

Please advise.
J.

I seem to have made a mistake. Without the LSI card, I cannot attach my octopus cable. Are there sata cables on the market that can connect to a sata connection on the motherboard (not the one to which my SATA disks are connected)?

I don't find any (yet). So in other words: on my HP NL40, my 4 SATA disks are connected to motherboard, then I'd like to connect 4 (or 6) SSD's in my sharkoon (+ an extra via e-sata).
